New Mexico State Penitentiary

New Mexico State Penitentiary is the primary maximum-security state prison in New Mexico, operated by the New Mexico Corrections Department and located south of Santa Fe in Santa Fe County along State Road 14. The facility gained national attention following the February 1980 prison riot, one of the deadliest in United States history, which resulted in the deaths of 33 inmates and injuries to more than 200 others. The aftermath of the riot led to significant changes in the management of the facility and New Mexico's correctional system overall. Today, the penitentiary houses adult male inmates at close and maximum security classifications and serves as the state's primary high-security institution.

Communication at New Mexico State Penitentiary follows New Mexico Corrections Department provider contracts. JPay handles electronic messaging, photo sharing, and money transfers. Families create a JPay account and add the inmate using their New Mexico corrections number to begin correspondence. GTL manages phone calls and video visitation under the NMCD statewide contract. The two-platform model applies: JPay for messaging and money, GTL for phone and video. Both platforms require separate accounts and separate funding.

The facility is located about 13 miles south of Santa Fe on State Road 14, also known as the Turquoise Trail. Santa Fe is roughly 65 miles north of Albuquerque on I-25. For Albuquerque families, the drive to the prison takes about an hour and 15 minutes. For Santa Fe families, the facility is a short drive south. New Mexico is a large state, and families in Albuquerque represent the largest potential visitor base given the metro area's population. JPay messaging and GTL video visits are practical for families in Las Cruces, Roswell, or other parts of the state who face longer drives.
