Riverbend Maximum Security Institution

Riverbend Maximum Security Institution is a maximum-security state correctional facility operated by the Tennessee Department of Correction, located in Davidson County on the west side of Nashville along the Cumberland River. The facility opened in 1989 and holds Tennessee's death row for male inmates alongside general-population maximum-security inmates. Its location within the Nashville metropolitan area makes it one of the more urban state maximum-security prisons in the South, accessible from multiple parts of Middle Tennessee without the long rural drives required to reach many other state facilities.

Communication at Riverbend operates through Tennessee DOC provider contracts. JPay handles electronic messaging, photo sharing, and money transfers. Families create a JPay account, add the inmate using their Tennessee DOC number, and purchase stamps to begin correspondence. GTL manages phone calls and video visitation under the TDOC statewide contract. Like other Tennessee state facilities, the process requires separate accounts for messaging and phone services. JPay handles one side, GTL handles the other, and funds on one platform cannot be used on the other.

Death row inmates at Riverbend may have communication access that differs from the general maximum-security population. Tennessee's death row is housed at Riverbend, and while JPay and GTL are the platforms used, specific access levels for death row inmates depend on TDOC policy and the inmate's current status. Families whose loved one is on Tennessee's death row should confirm current communication access with the facility. For general-population maximum-security inmates, the standard TDOC communication setup through JPay and GTL applies, and accounts created at Riverbend will carry over to any other Tennessee DOC facility if an inmate is transferred.
