Maine State Prison

Maine State Prison is the only maximum-security state prison in Maine, operated by the Maine Department of Corrections and located in Warren in Knox County along the Georges River in the mid-coast region of the state, roughly 80 miles northeast of Portland and 60 miles south of Bangor. The current facility opened in 2002, replacing the original Maine State Prison that had operated in Thomaston since 1824. The new facility is a modern, campus-style institution that houses adult male inmates at all security classifications from medium to maximum. It is the central facility in Maine's correctional system and serves as the state's primary long-term housing institution.

Communication at Maine State Prison follows Maine DOC provider contracts. JPay handles electronic messaging, photo sharing, and money transfers. Families create a JPay account and add the inmate using their Maine DOC number to begin correspondence. GTL manages phone calls and video visitation under the MDOC statewide contract. As with other Maine state facilities, the two-platform model applies: JPay for messaging and money, GTL for phone and video, each with its own account and funding.

Warren is in Knox County on Maine's mid-coast, between Portland to the southwest and Bangor to the northeast. US-1 passes through the region, and the facility is accessible from Route 1 and nearby state roads. For Portland-area families, the drive is about 80 miles — roughly an hour and 20 minutes. For families in Augusta, the state capital, Warren is about 45 miles south. Maine's correctional geography is relatively compact compared to larger states, and the Maine State Prison serves as the destination for most long-term male inmates from across the state. Maine DOC accounts carry over if an inmate transfers within the state system.
