Cummins Unit

Cummins Unit is the largest prison in Arkansas, operated by the Arkansas Division of Correction and located near the town of Grady in Lincoln County in the southeastern part of the state, roughly 90 miles southeast of Little Rock. Originally established in 1902, Cummins is an agricultural prison with a long and documented history that includes significant civil rights litigation in the 1960s and 1970s over inmate conditions. The facility covers thousands of acres of farmland worked by inmates and continues to operate as both a correctional institution and a working farm. It houses adult male inmates at close, maximum, and supermax classifications.

Communication at Cummins Unit follows Arkansas DOC provider contracts. JPay handles electronic messaging, photo sharing, and money transfers. Families create a JPay account and add the inmate using their Arkansas DOC number to begin correspondence. GTL manages phone calls and video visitation under the ADC statewide contract. The standard two-platform setup applies: JPay for messaging and money, GTL for phone and video. These are separate accounts — stamps purchased on JPay cannot be used for phone calls, and vice versa.

Cummins is in rural Lincoln County, roughly 90 miles from Little Rock. For families in the capital area, the drive takes about an hour and a half. For families in Memphis, Tennessee — about 150 miles east — a visit is a reasonable day trip. The facility's rural agricultural setting means it is not near major transit corridors. JPay messaging and GTL video visits are practical for families who cannot travel regularly. Arkansas DOC accounts work across all ADC facilities statewide and carry over automatically if an inmate transfers.
